A Note About Mirrors

Prior to 1967, all exterior rearview mirrors were an option. Then starting in 1967, new Federal safety standard laws required at least a driver's-side rearview mirror on all vehicles. However, Ford did not install mirrors at the factory. The standard mirrors were boxed (though in later years they were shrink-wrapped) and set on the vehicle's floorboard when they were shipped to the dealer.

Why? Well, the choice of mirrors was up to the buyer, and if Ford drilled the body panels to install mirrors that the buyer didn't want, then the dealer would have to remove the mirrors, weld up the holes and repaint.

The Type 5 mirror pictured above (commonly referred to as the 'Sport Mirror') was the standard mirror for light-duty trucks and were shipped to the dealer in every truck. However, since they were so small and difficult to use on a work truck, most buyers didn't want them installed, and since they came shrink-wrapped or in plastic bags and not in a factory box with the part number on it, they couldn't be returned, so ultimately many of these Type 5 mirrors were discarded by the dealer.
